Firewall configuration

Overview

In order to function properly, VitalSourceTM Bookshelf must have access to the internet. In many newer computers, this access is moderated by a firewall. This can be a hardware device on a large, managed network, or a piece of software on a single machine. Usually, the software will ask every time a new piece of software requests network access, and the user must accept or reject (block) the program from going to the Internet. In some modes (see Figure 1), however, this choice may not come up, and new applications are automatically prevented from having internet access without informing the user. This is always the case on a managed network's hardware firewall.

Managed Hardware Firewalls

This will take the action of a network technician. Please contact your network administrator and refer them to the support area of our website. They will also find help in the FAQ or by contacting our support team.

Settings in Personal Firewall software

If you know how to unblock access in your firewall for a given application, that is what needs to happen. (Allow all connections to VitalSourceTM Bookshelf/Evolve Select.) If you do not, here are suggestions for a generic procedure. We strongly suggest that you consult with your computer support provider, or the firewall developer if it differs significantly from this. VitalSourceTM Technologies can take no responsibility for changing the configuration of third party products.

Allowing Access

To see if your firewall is blocking Bookshelf's network access, first quit Bookshelf. Next, launch the firewall software. There should be a list of allowed and blocked sites.

Firewall Figure Two

Search the list for VitalSourceTM Bookshelf, or bookshelf.exe. If it shows in the list as blocked or limited, change the setting to Allow full access or Allow All.

Restart Bookshelf and update your license (from the Help menu). This should allow full access.

How would I know if I have a firewall issue?

Part of the problem with a firewall blocking access is how many different forms the error can take. In some systems, you are prevented from getting your list of books. (The license file is reportedly downloaded, but there is no list of available titles.) Sometimes, the error reported is an inability to download books that show up in the book list. And sometimes, the Bookshelf application gives an error at start-up.
