Creating & Removing Highlights
To highlight text in a VitalBook, select the text then click the Make Highlight button in the toolbar, or choose Make Highlight from the Book menu (Command-D).
From the drop-down menu in the toolbar, you can choose which color highlighter you would like to use.
Any highlights you make will show up under the Notes tab of the book window and the bottom portion of the Book Window. When you double-click on a note, you will go to that location in the book.
Making Notes
To make a note, select the text that you would like to annotate, then choose the color of highlight you would like to use. Click Make Note from the navigation toolbar. A Note Window appears into which you can record the notes you would like to accompany the selected text. Close the Note box and you will see a small yellow note icon appear on the right side of the text.
Highlights and Notes associated with an open VitalBook are displayed under the Notes tab. Double-click any note or highlight to go to that location in the VitalBook.
Highlights associated with a particular VitalBook are also displayed in the Bookshelf Window when that VitalBook is selected from the Resource list. Double-clicking on any note or highlight opens the VitalBook and takes you directly to that location in it.
To open a note associated with a particular highlighter, double-click the highlight in the text or on the small yellow note icon.
Highlighters List
All of your highlighters are available in the left pane of the Bookshelf Window.
You can edit the name of your highlighter by double-clicking on the name. The highlighter color can be changed by double-clicking on the color square.
You can add, delete, and rename your highlighters to meet your personal style.
- Click the + (plus) button to add a new highlighter
- To delete a highlighter, select it and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
Turning highlighters On and Off
Highlighter toggling is accessible via the View menu. Here you can check and uncheck highlighters.
Printing Notes & Highlights
To print the content of Highlights and Notes, copy the highlight (see Additional Highlight Options) and then paste it into a word processing program. Figures and all text formatting will carry over. Once you have created your own personal highlight and note document, then print from that program. Currently you cannot directly print highlights and notes from Bookshelf.
Saving your Notes & Highlights to a file
You can export select Notes & Highlights by following these steps:
- Open the book where you Notes & Highlights are located.
- Select the Notes tab.
- Select any or all of the Notes & Highlights that you would like to export.
By default your Notes & Highlights are exported to an .rtf file, which should be readable by any text or word processing application.
Backing Up Your Notes & Highlights
Bookshelf lets you back-up your Notes & Highlights, so you can store them safely, in the event that you need to restore them after some data loss. It is also a great way to migrate from one computer to another.
To back up your notes and highlights, choose Backup Notes and Highlights from the File menu. Choose a location and name for your backup. Bookshelf will then export your data into this file. You're then able to restore this data to Bookshelf.
To restore your Notes & Highlights choose Restore from Backup from the File menu. Select the backup file you wish to use to restore and Bookshelf will restore your highlights for you.
