East Carolina School of Dental Medicine selects Ingram’s VitalSource® for e-textbook solution

Nashville, TN –As digital learning curriculums are on the rise and more students are turning to e-textbooks for study, the East Carolina School of Dental Medicine has selected VitalSource, Ingram’s comprehensive e-textbook management and distribution platform, as a cornerstone of its new e-learning environment for dental students.

“Our school is implementing a broad set of integrated technologies that touch all parts of our curriculum,” said Dr. Robert Watkins, Jr., Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, East Carolina School of Dental Medicine (ECUSoDM).  “The tools and the digital content we get through VitalSource are foundational components of our overall strategy of enhancing complex problem solving and case-based learning.”

Vital Source worked directly with leading education publishers to develop a custom e-content package to meet the specific needs of ECUSoDM.  The school implemented the VitalSource platform as part of a larger technology initiative.  Students and educators at the school are now able to easily access content via download, online or through their mobile devices including popular iPad™, iPhone®, and iPod Touch® devices.

“ECUSoDM is one of the most progressive health science educational environments in the country,” said Kent Freeman, Chief Operating Officer, Vital Source Technologies, Inc.  “They use digital content in every aspect of didactic, preclinical, and clinical experiences with students and faculty, and we are pleased that our content-rich library and interactive tools will contribute to the success of the school’s unique learning environment.”

VitalSource, with more than 2 million users, is the most used e-textbook platform in education today.  With a presence on 6,000 campuses in 180 countries, educators and students have access to tens of thousands of titles from the world’s leading textbook publishers, including Elsevier, Pearson, Cengage, Macmillan, John Wiley and Sons, McGraw-Hill, Wolters Kluwer, Oxford University Press, Taylor & Francis and others.

The VitalSource platform is the preferred digital content platform for dental schools in North America and Canada. Other dental schools that have integrated the VitalSource platform into their curriculums include Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, Howard University College of Dentistry, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, University of Texas San Antonio Dental School, University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, University of Mississippi School of Dentistry, University of Alberta Dental School, University of Manitoba School of Dentistry and others.

Mr. Freeman concluded, “The faculty at ECUSoDM are exploring new ways to use the VitalSource platform to integrate books and journals into curriculums. They are using the shared notes function on our platform to broadcast expert opinions from the faculty to their integrated educational community.  We are pleased to be working with such inventive users.”
